Yoga has never been more popular. In recent months many families have turned to it for the first time from the comfort of their own homes to help them deal with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Studies published in the International Journal of Yoga have shown that yoga can reduce anxiety for the long term. Now more and more people are realising this benefit for themselves.

There are countless celebrities that swear by yoga and most have turned to it for the mental and emotional benefits more than the physical.  Yoga offers them a welcome relief to the chaos of stardom by providing them with an otherwise elusive inner peace. Thanks to these influential celebs, yoga has become a mainstream mind-body regimen that is followed by millions of people around the world.

Aside from the spiritual benefits, yoga addresses basic physical issues of flexibility, muscle tone and body sculpting, many celebrities have been vocal about the benefits of yoga in pregnancy and how it helped them get back to their former shape. Celebrities also love the fact they can do yoga anywhere – in hotel rooms, trailers, backstage in concert halls. Madonna has even done it in the aisle of aeroplanes.

Here are 10 of the most devoted yoga celebrities:

1. Jennifer AnistonJennifer-Aniston-yoga

Actress Jennifer Aniston has been practising yoga for more than 20 years with her yoga teacher Mandy Ingber. She is known for saying: “When I started doing yoga with Mandy, I noticed many things; my legs getting leaner, my arms getting stronger, and most importantly, I noticed an inner strength. I feel like I am getting a meditation, a workout, and time with my friend, all rolled into one.”

Ingber shared that Aniston’s routine usually starts with 30 minutes of cardio, followed by 40 minutes of yoga. A typical yoga workout includes “some power yoga, vinyasa flow and then some yin yoga stretching”. She does a minimum of 5 yoga sessions per week and credits yoga for the mental discipline that enabled her to give up smoking. She also cites yoga as giving her a better feeling of balance, “when you’re worried that your world is falling apart, yoga helps clear away that kind of anxiety”.

When she gifted Oprah a yoga mat it promoted a growing fascination for millions of TV viewers in the discipline that harmonises mind, body and health.

2. Kate Hudson

The actress and celebrity daughter is often heard promoting the benefits of yoga and is often seen posting a yoga pose on Instagram. She is known for using yoga and visualisation to prepare for the birth of her child. Yoga is one of the many activities Husdon practises regularly. She is also a big fan of Pilates, dance and outdoor sports.

3. Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence credits her successful acting role as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games as being partly thanks to yoga. She followed an intense training programme to improve her flexibility and dexterity. She trained with the same yoga instructor as Jennifer Aniston and claimed, "Beyond the incredible transformation, I begin to see with my body, working with Mandy has helped me become more in tune with my body and spirit. She has helped me find a balance between a physical strength and inner strength."

4. Jessica Biel

Hollywood actress and wife to Justin Timberlake credits yoga with helping her find her identity. She told Women's Health US: "I was searching for my identity as a person, and what defines me, and yoga became a space where I can really touch back into myself and my spirituality… It's more of a stress reliever and a life calmer. It just helps me with everything that I have to do in my life."  She practises yoga several days a week, mixing it with hiking, weight lifting, and biking.

5. Jessica Alba

Alba often shares snippets of her training on Instagram. "A couple times a week, I wake up at 5:15 for a hot yoga class," she shared in an interview with Self . "I don't like working out, but I feel really good after. It gives me energy and it just sets a good foundation for the day."

6. Gisele Bündchen

Despite being a 5’11” Brazilian supermodel, she didn’t get her figure by lying on the beach. In fact, she started doing yoga at the age of 12, the same age she started karate and Tai Chi. Before and after the births of her children she relied on yoga to maintain her flexibility and help her bounce back into her million dollar supermodel shape.

She does 3 or 4 yoga sessions a week and it can be for as little as 15 minutes. She claims to not do Asanas (yoga poses) all the time in her sessions. “Sometimes I just do mantras because yoga for me is a philosophy, it’s another tool to help you go inward, because my whole mission in life is to keep going inward. The world always takes you out here and my focus, whatever it is I’m doing, is to have tools to bring me back inward.”

7. Michelle Williams

Star of films such as “Brokeback Mountain”, “My Week with Marilyn”, “The Greatest Showman” and “Venom” is a strong believer in the healing power of yoga. It helped her deal with the death of her ex-partner, actor Heath Ledger, and the father to their daughter, when he died of an overdose in 2008. In fact, she was so inspired by yoga that she co-founded  “The Yoga for Single Moms Project” in 2011 in Boston.  She was so thankful to yoga for making her a better mother, “I love yoga for how it relaxes me and gives me more energy so that I can be happier and more available for my daughter”. She knew she was lucky to be able to afford the classes and the childminder, but realised it was financially out of reach for most other single moms.  So she came up with the idea for the program, “if you can clear the time, we do the rest. It provides childcare while mum in in the yoga class, and it’s all free”

8. Madonna

madonna-does-yoga

She is arguably the most well-known celebrity yoga fanatic of recent times. Whatever Madonna does, it’s never half-hearted, and this is certainly true of her devotion to yoga.

She famously said: “Yoga is a metaphor for life. You have to take it really slowly. You can’t rush. You can’t skip the next position. You find yourself in very humiliating situations, but you can’t judge yourself. You just have to breathe, and let go. It is a workout for your mind, your body and your soul.”

She is a fan of Ashtanga yoga and being a mother of four she combines yoga with her almost daily cardio-driven workout sessions and at the age of 61 she has the toned body of a twenty-something athlete.

9. Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow was famously mocked for claiming to popularise yoga in the USA and sees herself as one of the biggest influencers. The 48 year old star is without a doubt truly committed to practising yoga and wakes up at 4:30 am six days a week to practise. She's also quoted to have said this about her practice:

“… yoga has completely changed me. I try to do it every day, and the effect is amazing. It’s not just during the hours that I’m practicing. It’s about how it filters through into the rest of my life. It makes all the other bullsh*t dissipate. Who I am has emerged, and everything else has gone by the wayside.”

10. Reese Witherspoon

She’s one of the highest paid actresses in the world, a mom, and a production company owner… and she still makes time to keep fit.  She runs 3-4 times a week and practises yoga one to three times a week, either as a 90-minute class or a private yoga session at her home. She’s even been spotted doing yoga or is it “doga” with her very adorable dogs on the mat with her.
